I've Been Lasso'ed

I've been a room mom the past two years.  I volunteer every book fair and last year I was going into Greg's class once a week and Graham's every other week.

I love helping at my kids school, but I was REALLY not wanting to be a room mom this year.  To be honest, it's just one more thing on top of running a Cub Scout Pack and all the other mom mumbo jumbo I do.  Volunteering is one thing...but room mom feels like a whole other pack meeting I have to plan for.

I thought I was in the clear until Graham brought a note home saying NO PARENTS SIGNED UP!  Really?!  Only 3 of us signed up to even come into help in the classroom!  How sad is that?
I felt badly, for Graham really, not the teacher as much.  But I didn't want him to have sorry arse holiday parties because every other parent was "so busy.

So I said yes to room mom.  Fabulous.

Popcorn on the Cob - Fresh from the Farm!

I seriously love farm stands, farmers markets, etc.  It just feels nice to hand your money over to the person who earned it, not just the checker who asks if you need stamps.
Isn't this place just cute?  They sell all sorts of great things here, delicious sweet corn, fruit from all over Utah, their own sugar seedless watermelons and grass fed beef as well.
On Saturday Greg and I picked up some popcorn on the cob.  It's only $1 per cob and such a fun treat to make!
All you need is 1 paper bag and the corn
Place 1 cob into the paper bag...
 Fold over tightly....
Place on its side, fold down, in the microwave for 2 to 2.5 minutes.  Listen for the BANG!  POP!
Lauren thought this part was quite exciting!
Out comes white fluffy and delicious popcorn that is way more healthy than what comes in a bag from the store.
(Of course we might have added a shake or two of salt...)

Have you ever made this kind of popcorn before?
We are going back for more next week!

Back to School Traditions

While my boys started school a few weeks ago, Lauren is about to go to preschool for the first time on Monday!  What a big day, she is SO excited to say the least.
We have a few traditions around here to get ready for the new school year!
I take my boys out on individual dates before school starts.  Although part of the date is painful for them since they have to go shopping.
We pick out a new outfit and shoes for their first day of school, backpacks, etc.
The boys can pick anywhere they want to go and eat for lunch...
I try to steer the conversation around what new things they might be facing that upcoming school year.  Friends, teachers, buying lunch for the first time in the cafeteria!
And I don't think I can ever tell them enough how smart and handsome they are, how proud Dan and I are of them, and most of all, how we expect great things from them!
Somehow these dates include a new toy as well.

The night before school starts we get all their clothes and things ready to go.  Dan gives them a Father's Blessing for the new school year.  Mom gets one also since it always feels like such a busy and crazy time, I will take all the prayers I can get in raising these three little ones.

A nice hot breakfast of pancakes, eggs, sausage and oj start the year as well as taking the mandatory picture on the porch before heading off to school....

And sometime we sneak in a picture with the teacher if there is time and I am not a teary eyed blurry mess by then.
It can be hard knowing that someone else has your child for 8 hours a day!  I try to remind my boys every day to be kind, be a good friend and good example.
And to keep their Pokemon cards put away until lunchtime!

What traditions do you have for the new school year with your children?

Linking up to Kelly's Korner!
